So I'm sitting in a cab on my way from Pittsburgh National to Del Monte Foods, it was probably late December 2007 early January 2008 and we hit traffic. I mean a real doozy too. The cab driver and I started chatting and I mentioned in passing they should bolt real time gps receivers to cabs in cities to monitor traffic congestion. 3 months later I’m reading about the new Dash Express GPS. It kinda works the same way as a traditional GPS but it has a nifty built in cellular (GSM) collection as well as WI-FI as well. Now the cool ass thing with the DASH is it does basically what I was explaining to the cabbie.

Think of it as a social network for GPS receivers. You get historical data based on where you are and the time you are traveling through the area and it will give you an estimate via color coding the streets on what the traffic will probably be like. Now the really really cool part is that lets say someone with a Dash is ahead of you sitting in traffic, their receiver will transmit that real time data and your Dash will sync that and give you real time traffic data, on top of this it does the traditional traffic service reports that get pushed to most gps devices. With all of this data you can find your way around any accident.

Pretty sweet huh? Check out the videos.
